Kabuki-Otani Oniji by Toshusai Sharaku
This image shows the kabuki character Onjii. It’s a typical portrait by Sharaku, with it’s exaggerated, almost caricature like expressiveness. The artist Sharaku, is one of the most enigmatic figures in Japanese art. He appeared out of nowhere, creating some 140 designs, (mostly bust portraits of kabuki actors). And then, disappeared. Since then numerous theories and countless books have been written, trying to solve the riddle of his identity.
